At the Natural Hair Salon, we offer 3 types of hair straightening – L'Oreal Smoothing, Japanese Straightening and Cezanne Keratin Smoothing. Japanese Straightening is a popular way of permanently straightening wavy, coarse or curly hair, that originated in Japan in the 1990’s. We also offer the L'Oreal smoothing treatment, which permanently straightens while also not damaging the hair. Cezanne Keratin Smoothing is a smoothing procedure where keratin is the primary ingredient. All three methods have their benefits, so if you’ve been thinking about getting your hair straightened, here is a quick breakdown of the differences.

1. Japanese Straightening and L'Oreal is permanent; Keratin Smoothing lasts up to 6 months.

Once your hair is straightened with the Japanese or L'Oreal method, that hair is forever straight. It will resist being curled, and you’ll want to get your roots straightened every 6-9 months to keep up with your new hair growth. The effects of Cezanne Keratin Smoothing will gradually fade out as you wash your hair – up to 6 months depending on your hair-washing frequency.

2. Japanese and L'Oreal Straightening produces perfectly straight locks; Keratin Smoothing eliminates frizz and reduces curls or waves

Japanese and L'Oreal Straightening will produce pin straight hair on all but the tightest of curls. Cezanne Keratin Straightening produces more of a smoothing, de-frizzing effect while reducing (but not eliminating) curls or waves.

3. Japanese and L'Oreal Straightening changes the internal stricture of hair; Keratin Smoothing coats the outer strand of each hair

Cezanne Keratin Smoothing is a gentler process than Straightening. Straightening treatments is best used on hair that is less chemically processed (with colour, etc.) and closer to its “virgin” state. Hair that has had many chemical treatments may not be suitable for Straightening. Cezanne works well on chemically processed hair and can actually help strengthen damaged hair. Cezanne is formaldehyde-free, delivering the results of a traditional keratin smoothing treatment without the harmful chemicals.
